Swapping the Tools for the 'Trade Counter'
By Richard Walsh
I joined the Ablectrics team in October 2022, having run my own electrical installation business since 2014. I had a 25 year career in airline & freight sales before deciding to re-train as a domestic installer in 2008. I then spent 5 years with a local contractor; that’s where I was really able to put what I’d learned in the classroom into practice.
In 2014, I went out on my own, having gained accreditation though NICEIC and subsequently NAPIT. Over the following 8 years, I built up a loyal clientele across Bristol & Bath , providing all aspects domestic electrical services, from changing a faulty socket, to full rewires, kitchen & bathroom installations, test & inspection and fault finding. I particularly enjoyed designing garden lighting installations, ran power to many a garden office that would spring up during the pandemic and further trained in central heating control systems.
I’ve known the guys at Ablectrics for many years, having been a client and always found them to be very knowledgeable and helpful. Now finding myself on the other side of the counter, I’m glad to report that they’re no less helpful! I have a decent practical knowledge of electrical installation from my time on the tools, but it’s true to say that you never stop learning in this business! The new showroom in Zetland Road is second-to-none; every day we receive a positive response from customers who say they love being able to see such a wide range of lighting options on show, along with extensive product knowledge from the team. From bespoke pendant light sets in all shapes, colours and finishes, to the clever RAKO automated control systems, from EV charging to tailor-made LED tape and profile sets, we really can cater for everyone. The addition of the home cinema demo room is really something special too; I would highly recommend you taking a look if you can, you really won’t be disappointed!
It’s been fun serving and catching up with some of my old clients when they’ve visited the showroom. Similarly, I’ve met some of the guys and girls who I trained with 15 years ago, all still on the tools, a little older and a lot wiser! As for me, at my electrician’s knees are thankful they’re now on this side of the counter!
Make sure you pay us a visit at our Bristol showroom soon; you’ll be assured of a warm welcome from the whole team.
